Jack Molenaar

I am a lifelong resident of New Jersey (third generation Jersey), I was born in Paterson and raised in Fair Lawn. I have lived in Union County for the past 28 years; 26 of those in Fanwood starting in 1993. As soon as I moved to Fanwood I became involved in the Downtown Revitalization Committee. I have an undergraduate degree from Montclair State University in Urban Studies and a graduate degree from Rutgers University in Public Administration. I have more than 32 years of experience in operational management, transportation planning, land use studies, community planning, as well as transit and parking management. I started my career at the Somerset County Planning Board doing land development reviews, census work and transportation planning for 10 years and learning how County government can workfollowed that with five years of work in the private sector designing and teaching traffic calming solutions (roundabouts, bicycle lanes and pedestrian design) in New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New York City. I have also worked at the municipal level at the Township of Plainsboro before getting to Rutgers University where I am presently employed as the Senior Director of Transportation Services.

At Rutgers, I manage all campus transit, parking (permits and ticketing) and bicycle services. Rutgers transit system is the largest University transit system in the country and the parking system has over 34,000 stalls in a combination of surface lots and parking decks. My department covers all Rutgers campuses in New Brunswick, Newark and Camden. My Department budget is close to $15 million annually.

In Fanwood I served three terms as a councilman and I have been a member of the local land use board since 1995 and I’m also on our Historic Preservation Commission.  During my time in Fanwood I have also been on the Recreation Commission and have been the liaison to the Environmental Commission, the Historical Preservation Commission and the Board of Education. Another area where I volunteer in the transportation field is in my role as Chairman of the TMA (Transportation Management Association) “Keep Middlesex Moving”.

Why I'm Running For Sheriff

Most people in Union County do not realize that the position of Sheriff is an elected position. The Sheriff is the administrative head of the Union County police force and the officers at the court house. Unfortunately for Union County the persons that are elected to this position must answer first to the County boss, Senator Nick Scutari and not you the voters. I’m running because it is way past time that one person should have that much power over you the voters. We need to have people in charge who don’t first have to ask permission from the county boss prior to doing the right thing. I have served as a Councilman and have been volunteering locally for over 25 years. At Rutgers I have been involved in public safety emergency management table top exercises and have been working closely with policing for over 15 years. We need an administrative head who comes from outside the “old boy” network who isn’t afraid to ask the tough questions. I can be that person for you since I will only be answerable to the you, the real boss.
